Compilatio Leupoldi ducatus Austrie filij de astrorum scientia decem continens tractatus. Auguste Vindelicorum : Erhardi Ratdolt, quinto ydus Ianuarij [9 January 1489]. 4to (202 x 158); [110] leaves, last blank, signatures: a-n⁸ o⁶: 40 lines to a page; types 4:76G and 9:130G, two Roman fonts. Densely illustrated, with full-page woodcut illustration of an armillary sphere, 35 large woodcuts representing the gods and constellations, 1/3-page illustrations of the 12 signs of the zodiac (plus a smaller series repeated three times), 54 half-page astronomical diagrams, of which 2 are printed in red and black. 20th century brown calf, richly blind-tooled binding, in the style of the 16th century. An extremely fine and fresh copy on crisp paper.
First and only incunable edition of a rare astronomy work, with some of the earliest color illustrations printed in Europe. Primarily a work of astrology based on the writings of Albumasar, the sixth book concerns meteorology both from a theoretical and a practical point of view, the section De mutatiore aeris dedicated to the weather signs used by the peasants of the 13th century , also containing a descriptions of the most relevant natural phaenomena as winds, thunder and giving basic notions about methods of weather prediction. The Compilatio is divided into ten treatises; the first and second concern the spheres and their motion, also containing a dissertation on the comets at the end of the fifth book. The same block of woodcuts , including some bicolor printed illustrations., are among the earliest known printed figures of constellations and was used by Ratdolt to print the astronomical works of Albumasar and Hyginus.
