Carta de privilegio de los Reyes Católicos en favor de Juan Velazquez de Cuellar. Madrid, 8 de Marzo 1486, 4 leaves richly illustrated in different colours and gold. Unbound copy, retrains traces of the silk stiching in gold, red and white, as well as the notary's signatures.
Handwritten privilege letter written on parchment. The document is composed of 4 pages written on both sides in humanistic handwriting. - Historically it is remarkable the fact that by order of the queen Isabel the facts that proved the loyalty of Catalina Franca De Castro towards the royal family are detailed in the privilege, in the verso of the folio. - This young Portuguese noblewoman, who came to Castile as part of the retinue of Isabella of Portugal, was the mother of Juan Velázquez de Cuéllar. Queen Isabel had special affection for the Velázquez family due to the loyalty of Catalina Franca De Castro and the services of Gutiérrez Velázquez. - Proof of this is that she granted them the villas of Madrigal and Arévalo (including the royal houses of Arévalo used as the Velázquez family residence), which she had inherited from Isabel of Portugal. - In the name of God... Intitulacion. For the good and loyal services that Juan Velázquez, son of Gutiérrez Velázquez, has done and does every day to the kings, by means of this letter of privilege it is made known to all the major accountants that due to the outstanding services of Gutiérrez Velázquez and his wife Catalina Franca, very beloved of the queen's mother, Juan Velázquez is granted by oath of inheritance for himself and his heirs of all the lands that belong to the queen of the Villa de Madrigal: its land, term and jurisdiction. It includes in the document the text of the albalá that repeats the text of the royal grant. - The rich decoration of the privileged letter is concentrated in the recto of the first folio and in the capital letter of the second folio. - The decorative border, complex in its composition, shows a very elaborate workmanship and is influenced by the miniatures found in the margins of the books of hours. - The decoration is composed of vegetal motifs and fantastic anthropomorphic beings with animal bodies and human heads.- Juan Velázquez de Cuéllar y Franca was born in Arévalo, in the royal palace of this town, according to an albalá of Queen Isabel of 1486, in the decade of the sixties or seventies of the XV century. - He was commander of Membrilla in the order of Santiago, Major accountant of Castile, Ayo of Prince Don Juan, Page of the Queen Doña Catalina, Governor of the castles and lands of Arévalo, Madrigal, and Olmedo. - A trustworthy person, he was chosen testamentary of Prince Don Juan and Queen Isabella I the Catholic. He married Maria de Velasco, niece of the Constable of Castile. They were the parents of twelve children, six sons and six daughters, with whom the later Saint Ignatius of Loyola lived for years. - Juan Velázquez De Cuéllar y Franca died in Madrid in 1517.
