Includes Leroux's French translation, already published in 1829 and 1839, of which George Sand writes in her preface that it "has not only an admirable style, but also a perfect exactitude" ("... n'est pas seulement admirable de style, elle est d'une exactitude parfaite") (p. xiii). - First edition of the ten original etchings by Tony Johannot, printed outside the text on China as "avant la lettre" prints (see Sander, 303). Unique and bibliophilic copy in a master binding by George Canape, enriched with other exceptional additions: A portrait of Goethe engraved by Fournier, the complete set of three figures engraved by De Ghendt and Simonet after Moreau le Jeune for the 1809 edition, and the complete set of seven original etchings by Lalauze for the 1886 edition in double sequence "avant la lettre" and "definitive". Furthermore: the first three sheets of Werther of 1809 by Didot, a carefully calligraphed hs. Exergue (unknown scribe, little stained), as well as an original Goethe signature (ca. 10 x 5 cm, cut out and pasted in the center alone).
