First German edition of the first chronicle on Hungary written by a layman. Translated by Hans Hauge zum Freystein, this edition is illustrated with a large woodcut vignette on title and 18 woodcut illustrations by “P.F.” (Peter Flötner). János Thuróczy was a jurist and protonotary at the royal court of Buda under King Matthias Corvinus. He composed his chronicle in Latin shortly after August 1487; it is the most extensive fifteenth-century work on the history of Hungary, written by a protonotary at the royal court of appeals in Buda. Although he intended to correct the shortcomings of earlier chronicles, his work is largely a compilation of previous sources, and it covers in detail the mythical origin of the Huns and the Magyars, who were believed to descend from the Scythians. The first printed Latin edition appeared in 1488. In fact, this first edition appeared seven months after the Hungarian king's capture of Vienna. BMC/STC German p. 423; Rosenwald no. 665; Thieme-B.
