German edition of Melanchthon’s Loci communes, the foundational work of Protestant systematic theology. Martin Luther said of it that “next to Holy Scripture, there is no better book”. The book lays out Christian doctrine by discussing the “leading thoughts” from the Epistle to the Romans, intended to guide the reader toward a proper understanding of the Bible as a whole. This German text, first translated by Justus Jonas and later thoroughly revised by Melanchthon himself, was printed by Veit Kreutzer in 1555, 1556 and 1558. Melanchthon was a German reformer, collaborator with Martin Luther, the first systematic theologian of the Protestant Reformation, an intellectual leader of the Lutheran movement, and an influential architect of educational reform. Alongside Luther and Calvin, he stands as one of the principal reformers, theologians, and shapers of Protestantism. Manuscript inscription on title page, dated May 1632. Somewhat browned.
