First italian edition, second issue with the change of date on title page, of this important and influential anatomical treatise. The Spanish anatomist, Juan Valverde de Hamusco studied in Padua and Rome under Vesalius’s great rival Realdo Colombo, as well as under Bartolomeo Eustachi. He first published his work in Spanish, in Rome 1556 -the year following the second, revised edition of Vesalius’s De humani corporis fabrica (1555). This Italian translation, supervised by Valverde and executed by Anton Tabo, followed four years later, in 1560. The text draws heavily on Vesalius’s 1543 masterwork, and scholars continue to debate how much of Valverde’s treatise represents genuinely original contribution. Valverde envisioned the Historia as an improvement on the Vesalian model, and as such his treatise incorporates several modified Vesalian plates recut as copper engravings and 15 new, created by the Spanish artist Gasparo Becerra, a sculptor and painter who trained under Michelangelo and Giorgio Vasari. The most well known of these works is the engraving of a flayed muscleman holding a dagger in one hand and his flayed skin in the other, which looks remarkably similar to Michelangelo’s portrayal of Saint Bartholomew, and was most likely inspired by his example. The engraver was most likely Niccoló Beatrizet, whose initials appear on several Historia plates. Slightly damp stained, marginal paper repair at B6, manuscript inscription at title page.
