Panegyricus Augustissimo atque potentissimo Principo Ferdinando Frederico invictissimi imperatoris et maximi Caesaris Ferdinandi III. filio. Venetiis, Baba, 1654. Folio (410 x 295 mm.) Splendid Venetian baroque dedication binding for Ferdinand Frederick, son of emperor Ferdinand III, who became King of Bohemia (1646) and of Hungary (1647). At the time the book was printed in 1654, Ferdinand III was in Italy and died of smallpox on the ninth of July on his way to Milan. Title-page with engraved vignette of arms of Ferdinand III, one six-line floriated woodcut initial, engraved emblematic headpiece representing Helios and a quadriga, 34 p.
This scarce, privately printed Panegyricus was evidently presented subsequently by Ferdinand IV to Johann Weichard Graf von Auersperg (1615-1677), who was the Lord High Steward (“Oberhofmeister”) of the young king. The volume remained in the Auersperg library for three centuries (bookplate on upper endpapers). Tiny marginal worming in inner upper corner; title-page slightly browned. Binding slightly rubbed. Provenance: Otto Schafer, sold at Sotheby’s NY in 1994 (The Collection of Dr. Otto Schafer. Part I: Italian Books, lot 90).
