A superb collection of portraits of the Kings of Spain, drawn and engraved by the Flemish artist trained in Italy, Arnold van Westerhout. The serie begins with the first Gothic King of Spain, Ataulf, up to Charles II, the last Hapsburg. The 83 portraits have been trimmed and mounted onto strong paper. The engraved dedication depicts two allegorical female figures (possibly representing the Church and Spain, with shield and spear) flanking the central title, together with a globe, a lion, and solar symbols; in the lower section appear orientalized figures (possibly allegories of the defeated enemies of the Catholic faith). Born in Antwerp in 1651, Arnold van Westerhout learned the elements of his art in his native country, but completed his education in Italy, and worked in Florence before establishing himself in Rome in 1700 where his career as engraver, painter and designer continued until his death in 1725. Sold at Soyheby’s London in 1948.
