The fourteen striking fashion plates by the English artist and illustrator Thomas Esmond Lowinsky (1892–1947) are executed in a refined Art Deco style. Although their titles and iconography are drawn from classical mythology, the figures are set against distinctly modern metropolitan backdrops of soaring skyscrapers and smoking factory chimneys, creating a compelling juxtaposition of antiquity and modernity.
