This unfinished novel by Kafka was edited by his friend Max Brod. In the ten-page afterword, Brod discusses the moral dilemma he faced in not carrying out Kafka’s final request to destroy all his manuscripts upon his death. Der Prozess was written in 1914 and 1915. The disorganised manuscript had been in Brod’s possession since 1920. It was only after Kafka's death in 1924 that Brod first attempted to construct the novel in the author’s spirit. How Kafka himself foresaw the final edit remains a mystery. Der Prozess is one of the most important literary novels of the twentieth century and was kept in existence thanks to Brod's friendship and true dedication.
