Two seminal hand-coloured works on riff corals and marine life - * First French edition (orig. 1755) of this beautifully illustrated and seminal overview on corals by the British naturalist J. Ellis (1710-1776). Illustrated with frontispiece showing the titular grand polyp and 39 full-page plates (of which 5 folding), all hand-coloured. Ellis (ca. 1710-76), whom Linnaeus termed a "bright star of natural history" and "the main support of natural history in England," was one of the earliest marine zoologists. / * First French edition (orig. 1745) of this important work on the fauna and flora on the seabed of the Adriatic, by the Italian botanist V. Donati (1717-1762). Ill. with 11 full-page plates, all hand-coloured. Stocklist at the end of each book. Binding lightly rubbed, sm. defect at head and tail. Light browning & foxing on text pages of first book, plates very clean. Ms. names of corals under each plate in first book. Large bookplate of the Dukes of Arenberg, by Vermorcken after Schoy.
