Fine copy of Clausewitz’s monumental treatise „Vom Kriege“ (“On War”), a Cornerstone of Modern Strategic Theory. Edited posthumously by his wife, Marie von Clausewitz, and constituting Vols. I - III of „Hinterlassene Werke des Generals Carl von Clausewitz über Krieg und Kriegführung“ this book on political thought is described in Printing and the Mind of Man as “occupying a unique position among military writings of any age and nation.” Printed on fine “Schreibpapier” (writing paper), a high-quality wove stock distinguished by its heavier weight and smooth texture, used only for a limited number of copies, likely for presentation or distinguished subscribers. From the age of twelve, Clausewitz was a soldier in the Prussian army. He took part in the Napoleonic Wars and, as director of the General War School, studied the theory of warfare. Clausewitz explored the phenomenon of war philosophically like no other. “War,” according to Clausewitz, “is the continuation of politics by other means.” He was particularly concerned with the question of decision-making, which he sought to answer with regard to the art of war. His advice to “play through” all possible scenarios and only then arrive at a long-term strategy can be applied to all far-reaching decisions. According to Clausewitz, the hallmark of such a long-term strategy is the renunciation of the complete elimination of doubts in favor of decision-making that consciously takes into account unpredictable events. His theories on strategy, tactics, and philosophy had a major influence on the development of warfare in virtually all Western countries and are still taught at military academies today. They are also applied in the fields of business management and marketing. Provenance: from the library of Prince Alfons of Bavaria (1862–1933), with his small crowned monogram stamp to the title-pages. A general of cavalry and the younger son of Prince Regent Luitpold, Alfons was a cultivated bibliophile with a deep interest in the history of warfare. This finely bound set, in elegant Bavarian half-morocco, is a particularly fitting association.- Ref.: PMM 297; Borst 1651; Jähns 2852 ff.; Enser II, 506.
