Rare work to include the first geological map of the Riesengebirge (Giant mountains; Krkonose), created during the first natural historical scientific expedition. The scale is approximately 1:80.000. The main rock types are distinguished by colors: granite, gneiss, mica schist, limestone and shale. Smelters and till hammers are shown by special symbols. Ages of Proterozoic and Palaeozoic metamorphosed complexes, as well as of Upper Palaeozoic sediments and granite, are not specified. Comparisons of Jirasek’s map to current geological knowledge are worth mentioning, especially the recent establishment of boundaries between Giant Mountain Granite Massif and the neighboring metamorphic rocks as in the White Elbe valley. This collaborative effort contains observations on the mineralogy and botany made during a trip through the Riesengebirge Mountains, located on the border between Poland and the Czech Republic. Tadeáš Hänke (1761 - 1817) authored the botanical section while the Austrian/Czech mineralogist Johann Jirasek (1754 - 1797) wrote the mineralogical section, which has the title Mineralogische und botanische Bemerkungen auf einer Reise nach dem Riesengebirge. Beside geology and botany, the book contains chapters on physical geography, meteorology with climatology, and ethnology. The expedition was organized and sponsored by the Royal Bohemian Society for Sciences, and by nobility and landowners to find potential human, biological and mineral resources of the area.
