The second edition of one of the most influential and fascinating books of its age, substantially enlarged by the author from the first edition of 1621 and here appearing for the first time in folio format. Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy became one of the most popular books of the seventeenth century, encompassing the intellectual knowledge of its time together with its humour, pedantry and literary imagination. It shares much with Brant’s Ship of Fools, Erasmus’s Praise of Folly, More’s Utopia, Rabelais and Montaigne, and exerted a considerable influence on later thought (Carter-Muir, p. 239, after PMM). Robert Burton (1577-1640) studied and spent most of his life at Christ Church, Oxford, where he was appointed a life fellow in 1599. An Anglican clergyman and scholar, he devoted himself to the Anatomy, first published in 1621. The work underwent numerous revisions and expansions during his lifetime, with seven editions appearing by 1676. - Condition: Overall, a well-preserved copy with minor signs of age: slightly yellowed; occasional brown spots; water stains or spots across several pages in the lower right corner (pp. 41–63); p. 387 (recte 397), right corner torn off (no loss of text).
