Bound by René Kieffer with his stamp and label in half chocolate brown morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands and gilt decorated compartments and lettering, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Original printed paper wrappers bound in With 199 full page, hors texte, illustrations, complete as listed, plus numerous vignettes in the text,all engraved by Brevière after Grandville A clean and handsome copy. Small ownership label to first blank of each volume of Monsignor Jean Regnault Second issue of the first edition with the altered frontispiece in volume one and the variant decorative printed wrappers (bound in). “Scènes de la vie privée et publique des animaux” is a famous 1842 French satirical book. Conceived by publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel (under the pseudonym "P.J. Stahl") and featuring surreal anthropomorphic illustrations by J.J. Grandville, it uses animals acting like humans to heavily parody 19th-century French society and the rising bourgeoisie.
