FIRST QUARTO EDITION. 6 volumes bound in 3. 4to. (29 x 20 cm). Contemporary binding by Henry Stamper * with his stamp to verso of f.e.p. in each volume, of full richly gilt burgundy morocco, marbled end-papers, a.e.g. Small yellow label of stationer and booksellers “Vacher & Sons, 29 Parliament Street” to front paste-downs. Complete as listed with 250 tinted lithographs, including the 6 titles pages and 2 maps. Printed list of illustrations for last two volumes transposed. Some light foxing to verso of plates, rectos themselves clean and fresh, most handsomely presented in a fine contemporary binding. * Less celebrated than the names associated with him Stamper succeeded Francis Bedford as manager of the bindery founded by Charles Lewis. Stamper’s trade-card, records him as “H. Stamper, Bookbinder. Foreman to the late J. Clarke. 17, Frith Street, Soho Square” John Clarke being the one Francis Bedford went into partnership with as Bedford and Clark. Stamper in turn was succeeded by William Turner Morell (see Laurence Worms’ Bookhunter on Safari article “Bound by H. Stamper”. Henry Stamper was listed in the London street directories as a bookbinder at 17 Frith Street, Soho, between 1860 and 1866 and the latest binding by him we can see recorded is in 1857 according to Ramsden ‘s London Bookbinders. David Roberts' (1796-1864) two great, large folio works collectively known as ‘The Holy Land’, and ‘Egypt and Nubia’ (made after drawings Roberts sketched onsite during his travels through what is now Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Lebanon in 1838 and 1839), constitute one of the most splendid and historically important visual records of the Middle East ever produced. This later quarto edition, for which the plates were reduced in size with the help of the new technology of photography, comprises 250 tinted lithographs, and is widely considered to be a masterpiece of the medium.
