(400 x 385 mm) 8 leaves with mounted circular chromolithographed plates. Signed in print (and dated 1881). Loosely inserted in half cloth portfolio with printed title on cover. Inner hinges reinforced, a contemporary german translation in ink under the printed title.
Exceedingly rare pattern book on flower arrangements for painting on porcelain and faience by the Russian genre painter Baron Mikhail Petrowitsch Klodt (Michail Clodt von Jürgensburg; Михаил Петрович Клодт; 1835 - 1914). Published by the Association for the Promotion of Art at the printing house of the Ministry of Railways (A. Benke). Mikhail Klodt is the elder son of the famous sculptor Petr Karlovich Klodt, the most well-known and accomplished artist in the family. He initially studied under the artist Alexander Alexeyevich Agin, and from 1852 under Alexei Markov at the Russian Academy of Arts in St Petersburg. In 1861, he was awarded the gold medal for his work Poslednjaja Wesna (‘The Last Spring’). From 1857 to 1860, Mikhail Klodt worked in Paris, was supported by the Russian Empire as a recognized artist in his country and travelled throughout France with his cousin Mikhail Konstantinovich Klodt, who was also an artist. He lived in Munich from 1862 to 1865. For his painting Derevenskiye Krasavitsy (Peasant Beauties) and for Vosvrashcheniye s polya (Return from the Field), Klodt was awarded the rank of academician in 1867 and professor in 1872. His painting entitled Musykant (‘The Musician’) attracted the interest of the important Russian art collector Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov. Mikhail Klodt was one of the founding members of the so-called Peredvizhniki as well as the community of Russian watercolourists. He taught at the art school of the Imperial Association for the Promotion of Art (1865-1867, 1875-1913) and also ran a watercolour drawing class at the school of the Russian Baron Alexander von Stieglitz.- not in Obolianinov and Vereshchiagin. The only copy that I found in institutions is at the Russ. State Library, and seems to have only 6 plates !
