8vo (150 x 90 mm). Engraved frontispiece, several woodcut initials, ruled throughout. Contemporary French binding in crimson morocco profusely gilt, spine raised on 5 bands gilt with small arabesque tools, inside gilt dentelle, doublures and endleaves of finely marbled paper, edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Mills.
Remarkably fine French binding delicately excuted to a post-fanfare design with filigrée-pointillée decoration. Some tools used in our item closely resemble those used by the famous Rocolet-Padeloup bindery in Paris, active from c. 1638 to c. 1662 (cf. Esmerian Sale Catalogue II, Supplement Annexe A, V, top row). Noteworthy also is the handsome marbled paper with a small-comb pattern as it was used in France in the mid-seventeenth century (cf. Wolfe, Marbled Paper, pl. XV, 3). - In very good condition.
