Very rare edition with the original version by the London publisher John Nourse, in the year of the first edition (Geneva, Cramer). It is the first publication of the original text in England. The text contains some passages prior to the Cramer edition which was published in January 1759, generally considered as the first, whereas the Nourse edition appeared in May 1759. There is, among others, the famous sentence on German poets on page 242 "Candide était affligé de ses discours ... mépris pour nos poetes Allemands ... " which is not found in any Cramer edition. Voltaire cancelled this passage during the printing of the Cramer editon. It is now generally agreed that Nourse must have received the original manuscript before Voltaire decided to suppress the paragraph on German poets. It is noteworthy that the Nourse edition (59y) is typographically more beautiful and on better paper than the Cramer edition (59a). - In best condition. Ref.: Bengesco 1435; Morize 59y; I.O.
