(blank). -- Contemporary green crushed morocco exquisitely gilt and inlaid, signed on lower morocco doublure "P. KERSTEN": on covers gilt frame, in centres a large vignette of gilt tools and black and red inlays forming a stylised flower bouquet; flat spine with matching gilt and inlaid ornaments and gilt lettered brown morocco label; doublures of brown crushed morocco profusely gilt to an all-over design, endleaves of brown watered silk; top edges gilt, rest edges uncut. In the original green morocco-edged slipcase lined with light-brown silk.
One of 100 numbered copies of the 5th book of Hans von Weber's celebrated "Hundertdrucke" (Hundred Printings series) in an enchanting inlaid and 'doublé' morocco binding by the foremost German master binder PAUL KERSTEN (1865 - 1943). He was called the father of modern art bookbinding in Germany. Along with Carl Sonntag Jun., he was the most prominent German bookbinder at the beginning of the 20th century. He inspired the next German binding generation, in particular the pupil in his Buchbinder Fachschule in Berlin, the outstanding bookbinder OTTO DORFNER (1885 - 1955), who developed a modern Linear Style (see above his binding for Plutarch: Erotikos). This is a highly important early binding by Paul Kersten, undoubtedly one of his best masterpieces, brilliantly designed and perfectly executed. Such outstanding Kersten bindings come very rarely on the market. -- HUNDERTDRUCK: The rare and sought after fifth work of the "Hundertdrucke" of Hans von Weber is printed in an old Flemish antiqua on heavy Aldwych-handmade paper in the office of Joh. Enschedé en Zonen in Haarlem. This fine print is considered one of the most beautiful of Baudelaire's "Fleurs du Mal" (1857). With a printed dedication to Théophile Gautier on page 7. This deluxe edition was curated by G.A.E. Bogeng, with his notes in German at the end: "Die Bücher der Hundert / Bibliographische Anmerkungen." -- An altogether exceptional copy in perfect state. -- Ref.: J. Rodenberg: "Deutsche Pressen".
