Schmied in the colophon, from a total edition of 170, with 649 illustrations, designed, wood engraved and printed in many colours, heightened by gold and silver. Interspersed throughout the text are many "bandeaux et lettrines" by the artist. With a signed manuscript "envoi" by Mardrus to the artist Schmied on f. 2. -- In the original unbound state, in original covers and in original slipcase.
First edition of this sumptuously illustrated work, a translation of the Arabic text into French by Dr. Mardrus, with the superb illustrations and decorations by the outstanding artist, Francois-Louis Schmied (1873 -1941), considered the most brilliant book illustrator and book artist of the Art Deco period. Schmied's great technical accomplishment in colour printing is well exemplified in our item. His perfect colour printing required a large number of individual blocks which were very difficult and time consuming to print.
