WO II Forbidden book 1933 | Das Vaterland. Ein Tatsachen Roman aus dem heutigen Deutschland, P.N. van Kampen Amsterdam 1933, 295 pp. Text in German. With original dustwrapper and the rare promotional belly band. One of the earliest German-language exile novels and one of the first literary eyewitness accounts of Nazi Germany, published in Amsterdam only months after Hitler’s rise to power. Heinz Liepman’s documentary novel describes (in 1933 !) the rapid transformation of Hamburg through political terror, antisemitism, SA violence and the establishment of the first concentration camps. Original linen hardcover binding with some water damage, especially on and near the spine. 19,5 x 12 cm. With original dustwrapper with its striking barbed-wire motif and swastika. Dustwrpapper with damages, and some missing paper. With the rare publisher’s promotional book band (buikbandje): Ein tatsachenroman aus dem heutigen Deutschland. And in red printed letters in handwritten style: Den in Hitler Deutschland ermordeten Juden gewidmet. Dedicated to the Jews murdered in Hitler’s Germany. This wording is remarkable because the novel was published as early as 1933 and thus provided exceptionally early testimony to the deadly nature of the National Socialist persecution of the Jews.

Richly illustrated with hundreds of woodcut genealogical tables, it traces the dynasties of the Holy Roman Empire and Western Europe, including the Counts of Holland and the noble houses of Brederode and Teylingen, making it a fundamental source for the study of medieval and early modern aristocratic genealogy.

Rare VOC notebook with silver clasps (4) showing VOCR for VOC chamber of Rotterdam, and silver shields (2) with a Dutch VOC ship. With original pencil / stylus (with silver mark) that closes the binding. Notebook with later manuscript notes, some dated 1910, some 1918, further undated. In the back a secret compartment made of decorated paper and cloth (the cloth with severe wear). Black shark skin leather binding (“Segrijn”), 13,5 x 7,8 cm. Silver without traceable silver marks. Written in high Dutch 1622 by Jacob Behmen, alias Teutonicus Phylosophus. London, Macock for Calvert, 1651. A very rare, first edition copy of the English-language translation of Jakob Boehme’s (1575-1642) Signatura rerum (1622). The writings of Boehme, a German mystic and theosopher, inspired the 17th-century Christian movement known as Behmenism. Controversial for its religious heterodoxy, Boehme’s mysticism nevertheless attracted a great number of followers across continental Europe and England.

Erpenius, Thomas (1584-1624). First professor Arabic in Leiden University.

Edition of two Arabic grammatical treatises: 1. The Ajurrumiya or Gjarumia, compiled by Muhammad bin Muhammad al-Sanhaji, a classic introduction to phonology. This is the first vocalized edition. 2. The Hundred Rules of Syntax or Mi’at’al-amil by Abd a’-Quahir al-Jurjani. Grammatica Arabica dicta Gjarumia. / With Latin translation and annotated by T. Erpenius, Leidae, ex typ. Erpeniana 1617, (8)+157+(2) pp. Text in Arabic and Latin. With manuscript notes. Works by Thomas Erpenius (1584-1624), the first professor Arabic in Leiden University. His commentary in Latin on the Ajurrumiyah, a highly influential medieval Arabic grammar by Moroccan scholar Ibn Ajurrum (died 1327), and the Mi’at ‘amil (“hundred rules) of Abd al-Qadir al-Jurjani (died 1078). The Ajurrumiyah is “the most widely used primer in the whole history of Arabic Grammar” and inspired countless epitomes and commentaries, of which Erpenius’s edition was especially important: the first edition, published at Rome in 1592, was printed entirely in Arabic so “was by no means easily accessible to European scholars unfamiliar with Arabic linguistic terminology” (Vrolijk & van Leeuwen, Arabic Studies in the Netherlands, p. 32).

Rare manuscript, early relic certificate Slovenia Graz 1620

Rare survival of an early seventeenth-century Authentica Reliquiarum, a type of document that was normally enclosed within a reliquary and often lost when reliquaries were opened, damaged or dispersed. Original signed relic authentication dated 1620, issued during the height of the Counter-Reformation, confirming the authenticity of a large group of saints' relics. Personally confirmed by Erasmus Paravicini (ca. 1562–1640), Papal Nuncio at the court of Emperor Ferdinand II and titular Archbishop (later Bishop) of Alexandria. Connected to the Franciscan convent at Pettau (today Ptuj, Slovenia), one of the oldest medieval monastic centres in present-day Slovenia. The handwritten text states that the relics have been investigated and were found authentic. In the text: Erasmus Paravicini, Ambrosii de Tabia (Ambrosius van Tabia), Graeci (=Graz) 18 juli 1620, Frey, 19 juli 1620, Joes Ant.
