Imprimatur leaf + (14) + 346 + (4) pages [complete]. 19th century half calf binding with five raised bands, black title-label to spine, marbled boards. Some rubbing to the spine. Some edgewear. The outer hinges have a bit cracked, but still holding firmly. First leaf with reinforced lower outer corner. First leaves soiled and dark due to age. Small cut-out to titlepage with loss of three words ‘has carnal copulation’ [which obvoiusly has been too daring!]. Pp. (15/16) with some stains in outer margin. P. 225/226 with a small (1x3 mm) hole with loss of a single letter. Page 283 with a brown stain in lower margin. Some light foxing. Professionally repaired long tear in last leaf. Missing last blank leaf. From the library of the psychiatrist Denis Leigh, with his name label on fly-leaf. Some contemporary annotations at outer margin occur.

Contemporary full brown calf with richly gilt spine, gilt decorations on boards and inside gilt borders. All three edges gilt. Contemporary engraved bookplate on front pastedown. Recent bookplate on front endpaper. Spine-ends somewhat worn. Corners slightly bumped. Outer hinges a bit weak. Old inventory number in ink on verso of front endpaper. Slight edgewear.

Two sets of tilk ties, top and bottom of boards are present but in tatters. Third set of ties missing. The light exterior a little grubby and with old staining to rear board along foreedge. Mild, uneven browning to inside boards with pastedown paper minutely nicked at ends of spine. Prints and paper in near fine condition.

The leaves a1-c8 are restored to the lower margins; most well outside the text, but some with a little text loss. Owner's names and notes to the verso of the titleleaf [one dated 1502], partly missing, due to restoration of the paper. A few scattered marginal notes in the 1502 hand. Some browning/dampstaining to the leaves.

Spine gilt and with five raised bands. Older inked name to front free endpaper. Pages occaisionally showing small ink or burnmarks. Only light foxing. Some pages with folds in text. First fold-out plate (Constantinople) with a repair (tear still showing on motif) and a few inkstains. Pages 1-4 with coarser repairs. In the case of pages 3/4 a vertical closed tear is still affecting text as one has tried to avoid covering lettering with paper. Smaller repair to page 5/6.
