First edition, it was reprinted in 1790. The work’s aim is to demonstrate how a straight line of a given length, tending towards a given point, could be inserted between two given (straight or circular) lines. It belongs to Apollonius’ lost works, described by Pappus of Alexandria, which also provides valuable information on their content, and later reconstructed. Samuel Horsley was bishop of Rochester as well as a mathematician; author of several work on the subject, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, of which he was later appointed secretary.
