Cont. calf, a little worn, spine restored, Few pp. faintly browned, restoration on title-page not affecting text and woodcut. Very good copy.

First edition, published as a volume of the Histoire de l'Académie des Sciences of Paris; the publications of the Académie were printed from 1666 unto 1790, for a total of 164 volumes (Graesse). Cassini contributed with several work, some of which of astronomical subject. The French astronomer Jacques Cassini was the son of the Italian born Domenico Cassini (also an astronomer) and from 1712 his successor as head of the Paris Observatory. He measured the arc of meridian between Dunkerque and Perpignan, studied the sun, the moon and the fixed stars, the motion of the stars, and described the planets, including Saturn's rings and Jupiter's satellites.
