Frontispice and plates engraved by Carlo Gregori (1702-1759), title page printed in red and black. Contemporary half vellum, handwritten title on spine. Very fine copy on large paper, the largest copy in the market.
First edition. The Baron d'Eisenberg was a famous German riding master who taught horsemanship at the courts of Saxony, Naples, London and Florence. He wrote a number of works which enjoyed wide popularity and were translated into many languages. The frontispiece depicts a cartouche with the text “Anti-maquignonage pour éviter la surprise dans l’emplette des chevaux” (Anti-fraud measures to prevent surprises when purchasing horses). The works of Eisenberg “ne sont pas très rares, sauf l'édition de 1743 du Manège moderne et la belle édition franco-italienne de l'Anti-Maquignonnage” (Menessier de la Lance). Eisenberg depicts several aspects of the horse, heads, tails, fronts, feet, legs, etc., as well as the most commonly observed defects and how to recognize them, to avoid to be swindled in their purchase. The 119 figures on 22 engraved plates are all after the author's own designs, the folding plate depicts “Favori, un Berbe de Tunis”. “Belle impression et beau papier.
