Two parts of Paul of Aegina’s De re Medica (chapter 3 of book 7 and chapters 73-99 of book 1, respectively). First printing of Brunfel’s translation of the Pharmaca simplicia; the translation by Guillaume Cop of De ratione victus was originally published in Paris in 1510 as part of book 1 of De re medica, under the title of Praecepta salubria. De Re medica, also known as Medical Compendium in Seven Books, is a medica encyclopedia and the best known work 7th-century Byzantine Greek physician and surgeon Paul of Aegina. His work, a summary of all the medical knowledge available at the time, is remarcable for its accuracy and completeness. Paul of Aegina’s works were “Based largely on the works of such earlier Greek physicians as Galen, Oribasius, and Aëtius, the Epitome greatly influenced the medical practice of the Arabs, who considered Paul among the most authoritative of Greek medical writers. … Thus, Paul’s work exercised a lasting influence on Western medieval medicine when the Arabic works were adopted as primary references in medieval Europe.” (Encyclopedia Britannica). Otto Brunfels was a German theologian and botanist and he is often remembered as “a father of botany”. The physician and himanist Guillaume Cop was personal physician to King Louis XII and first physician to King Francis I; he translated from Greek into Latin, and edited, ancient medical works.
