First edition. De Vattel was a Swiss jurist and international lawyer. He was much influenced by Leibniz and Hugo Grotius. “... in Le Droit des gens (1758; “The Law of Nations”), applied a theory of natural law to international relations. His treatise was especially influential in the United States because his principles of liberty and equality coincided with the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence. In particular, his defence of neutrality and his rules for commerce between neutral and belligerent states were considered authoritative in the U.S.” (Encyclopedia Britannica). Vattel’s work was based on the Jus gentium methodo scientifica petractatum, by the German philosopher Christian Wolff, published in 1749. Vattel, however, disagreed with Wolff’s conception of a regulatory world state, sustaining that national rights and duties proceed from the law of nature. Vattel combined naturalist legal reasoning and positivist legal reasoning; the present work was highly influential and gained the author an appointment as councillor to the court of Frederick Augustus II of Saxony.
