"Exposito Psalterii". Augsburg, Schüssler, 1472. 32 : 22,5 cm. 133 leaves (without the first and last blank leaf) with two large initials painted in green, done by hand with red-ink decoration, and rubricated and decorated ("penwork") initials on 31 leaves. Bound in purple morocco leather on six gilt raised bands, spine richly blind-tooled, gilt tile on spine, gilt initials JR (John Rylands) on front board (added later), inner boards with gilt filets and blind-tooled borders.
Original Latin edition of the important and influential extensive commentaries on each of the 150 psalms, by the Spanish Dominican cardinal Juan de Torquemada (ca. 1388-1468). He brings together quotations from the Church Fathers (his sources include Chrysostom, Augustine, Cassiodorus and Remigius) and discusses the meaning of psalms for devotion to Christ and for the Church generally. Printed in Augsburg in 1472 by Johannes Schüssler, this Expositio Psalterii by Johannes de Turricremata is a fine early incunable, handsomely rubricated throughout with large hand-painted initials. The text is set in Gothic type with generous margins, and the volume is preserved in an elegant English purple morocco binding, attributed to Charles Lewis, with gilt edges. - Provenance: Library of the Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt: Manuscript inscription from the 17th century on the first page "Ad Bibliothecam aulicam Eystettens", the same abbey from which the famous botanical work 'Hortus Eystettensis' originated. George John, 2nd Earl of Spencer (1758-1834), on of the greatest bibliophiles of his time, with his oval leather gilt bookplate, at the bottom of the inside of the front board. Large heraldic bookplate of the John Rylands Library (1894) on the inside of the front board. At the bottom of the final flyleaf, at the end of the volume: a printed label of the "John Rylands University Library of Manchaster" bearing the text: "Withdrawn from stock April 1988". - This volume is in fact one of the 98 relics sold on April 14, 1988, as so-called “duplicates” by the John Rylands Library, a sale which provoked feelings of frustration and bitterness, as expressed by the British press. - A handsome, well-preserved copy of a major 15th-century theological work, combining early printing, fine binding, and an outstanding collecting history.
