This work contains the first coeval History of Mexico and its conquest. Third edition of this valuable literary, historical and typographic work by the chronicler of the King of Spain between 1661-1686, first published in 1684. Printed in double columns all numbered. - Solis says (see Chap. II) that previous chroniclers had not treated the History of Mexico separately from other achievements, joining, as happened in the Antonio Herrera"s First and Second Decades; and in the History of Peru by Garcilaso Inca; confirming that these two authors had not known Mexico with approach, dealing only with minor matters, without consistency in their news. Also the story of Bernal Diaz del Castillo, kept long in manuscript and printed with gaps, has loss of information and has been taken as scattered, so Antonio Solis joined "Relaciones and Papers", from public and private archives, to form a reliable narration. Beautiful plates and vignettes contained in this work, namely: a vignette by Harrowin with the arms of Spain; a vignette bearing the effigy of the author at the beginning of his biography; a vignette at the beginning of the with the Spanish Armada; double page plate with the Spanish Armada in the River of Canoes; the beautiful representation of the entry of ships with all their open sails in the port of Santiago de Cuba; the double-page engraving of the dismantling of the Armada to prevent the defection from the expedition of Cortez; the magnificent engraving in a double foldout page with the large Lake Texcoco and the Lake of Mexico, with all its marked lake communities; engraving fold with the view of Mexico City with its exact deployment at the center of Lago Maior; the fold picture of the Great Temple of Mexico (recreating the Renaissance style alluding to their human sacrifices) with its walled enclosure and the Pyramid of Skulls in the foreground; the full-page picture detailing of the method to human sacrifice in the Great Temple; and in front of it a Renaissance recreation of the sacrificial god Uitzilpostli based in Amerindian iconography; a double page engraving with the dances in indigenous festivities Mitotes; a full page plate with the symbolic and voluntary imprisonment of Moctezuma before Cortez; a double page with the Battle of the Valley Otumba; a double page plate with the battle of Cortez’ brigs with Mexican canoes on the Lake of Mexico; and the double-page engraving with the retreat of Guatimozin arrested by Holguin. - Antonio de Solís's (1610-1686) a Spanish historian kwnown for his elegant literary style. His history of the Conquest of Mexico published in Brussels in 1704 by the printer Francisco Foppens. This work is a chronicle of the conquest of Mexico that has been very popular in Europe since its first publication, being highly regarded for both its historical accuracy and its literary style. The work was very successful in Europe, with early translations that included maps and engravings.
