Official presentation album containing the complete series of prison emergency money (Gefangenengeld) issued by the Hamburg Prison Administration during Germany’s hyperinflation in 1923. Bound in its original grey card portfolio with foritfied spine, the album retains its printed explanatory essay and the original mounted specimen notes ranging from the earliest low denominations to the spectacular 5 Million Mark issue of November 1923. Unlike ordinary German Notgeld, these vouchers never circulated among the general public. Every note bears the restriction that it was “Valid only for prisoners within the Hamburg Prison Administration.” Introduced in the spring of 1923, the system served two purposes: simplifying prison accounting and teaching inmates financial responsibility through earned wages and controlled spending within the prison canteen. The accompanying contemporary text explains that the prison administration regarded the currency as part of a broader programme of rehabilitation. Prisoners received wages for their work and learned budgeting and saving before their eventual release. The text further records how the rapidly accelerating inflation forced repeated redesigns of the notes, beginning with denominations of only a few marks and culminating in issues of several million marks before the introduction of the Rentenmark ended the hyperinflation.
