Rare manuscript, early relic certificate Slovenia Graz 1620

Rare survival of an early seventeenth-century Authentica Reliquiarum, a type of document that was normally enclosed within a reliquary and often lost when reliquaries were opened, damaged or dispersed. Original signed relic authentication dated 1620, issued during the height of the Counter-Reformation, confirming the authenticity of a large group of saints' relics. Personally confirmed by Erasmus Paravicini (ca. 1562–1640), Papal Nuncio at the court of Emperor Ferdinand II and titular Archbishop (later Bishop) of Alexandria. Connected to the Franciscan convent at Pettau (today Ptuj, Slovenia), one of the oldest medieval monastic centres in present-day Slovenia. The handwritten text states that the relics have been investigated and were found authentic.
