CALLS, SOUNDS AND MERCHANDISE OF THE PEKING STREET PEDDLERS. No date, but 1936, Peking, The Camel Bell, landscape 4to, pp xiv, 1-66, 65-88, 87-186, original boards with colour pattern silk covers, silk thread binding, printed paper label, 61 colour lithographs of peddlers, 16 tipped-in black and white photographic illustrations, one page of Chinese text, one page of music, one paper pattern, one “Pa Kua” diagram.
Only 54 lithographs are listed, but there are 5 different Fortune Tellers, 2 different Candied Fruit Peddlers, 2 different Earthen Vessel Peddlers, and 2 different Match Peddlers. The author, a Westerner, prepared this work as a partial requirement for the Master of Arts degree at the College of Chinese Studies in Peking. A fascinating study into the life, habits and psychology of the Peking residents, who numbered some seven hundred thousand at this time.
