Hierinn sind begriffen vier Bücher von menschlicher Proportion durch Albrechten Dürer von Nürerberg erfunden und beschrieben zu nutz allen denen so zu diser Kunst lieb tragen. Arnhem, gedruckt durch Johan Janssen, 1603. 4°. 30 x 21 cm. 129 [von 132] Blatt. Von alter Hand restaurierter Halbband auf 7 Bünden mit Rückenbezug aus hellem Kalbsleder, Deckelbezug aus Marmorpapier, Pergamentecken und goldgeprägten Rückentiteln auf Lederschildchen.
Früher Nachdruck der ersten Ausgabe. Bohatta 18. vgl. Brunet II, 914. vgl. Schoch III, 277. Mit Titelmonogramm in Holzschnitt und 140 (von 142) meist ganzseitigen Holzschnitten im Text, davon 2 auf Falttafeln. Bogenzählung: A-M(6), N(4), O(5), P-S(6), T(4), V-X(6), Y(1-2, 4-5), Z(4). Weitgehend identischer Nachdruck der ersten Ausgabe von Albrecht Dürers Proportionslehre unter Verwendung derselben Holzstöcke. Die Holzschnitte, die in der einschlägigen Literatur ansonsten häufig als schwächer beschrieben werden, weisen hier eine mit der Ausgabe von 1528 vergleichbare Qualität auf. Lediglich in der Typographie finden sich geringfügige Abweichungen. Auf Blatt Q3 sind die beiden oberen Köpfe außerdem in vertauschter Reihenfolge wiedergegeben, in anderen Exemplaren dieses Nachdrucks wurde hierfür ein abweichender Druckstock verwendet. Aufgrund der großen Nähe zum Original sowie des auf dem Titelblatt beibehaltenen Datums der Erstausgabe wird dieser Nachdruck häufig mit jener verwechselt. Dürers letzte theoretische Schrift erschien posthum, wurde jedoch noch von ihm selbst zum Druck vorbereitet und teilweise korrigiert. In ihr entwickelt er seine geometrischen und arithmetischen Grundlagen der Proportion und führt die Darstellung des menschlichen Körpers im Raum und in der Bewegung zu einem systematischen figuralen Kanon zusammen. Einband etwas bestoßen und beschabt, Deckel mit Schnittspuren. Ausschnitt des Titelblattes auf nachträglich eingefügtes fliegendes Blatt montiert (kein Textverlust), dieses mit altem Vorbesitzerstempel. Seiten insgesamt leicht bis mäßig gebräunt, stellenweise etwas stockfleckig, die Stege zum Teil mit wenig nachgedunkeltem Wasserrand (ohne Text- oder Bildberührung). Blatt A6 direkt hinter das Titelblatt gebunden. Einriss im Bundsteg von Blatt C5 sauber und fachmännisch mit Papier hinterlegt. Blatt S5 mit der doppelseitig bedruckten ursprünglichen Falttafel „Der ander Felscher“ (recto mit konkavem Bogen und den Maßen der sehr schlanken Frau, Schoch III, 277.110, verso mit konvexem Bogen und den Maßen des sehr schlanken Mannes, Schoch III, 277.111) nur zur Hälfte vorhanden und ca. am Falz abgetrennt. Blatt Y4 mit kleinem Einriss im Kopfsteg (ca. 1 cm, ohne Bild- oder Textberührung). Seite X3a wie üblich leer. Blatt Y3 fehlt, damit fehlen auch 2 ganzseitige Holzschnitte, ebenso wie das Blatt Z5 mit der „Elegia in obitum Alberti Dureri“ von Willibald Pirckheimer und das Blatt Z6 mit den Corrigenda. Insgesamt dennoch gutes bis sehr gutes Exemplar von Dürers Proportionslehre. Die Holzschnitte selbst sind in klaren, kräftigen Abdrucken erhalten. Early reprint of the first edition. Bohatta 18. cf. Collation: A–M(6), N(4), O(5), P–S(6), T(4), V–X(6), Y(1–2, 4–5), Z(4). Largely identical reprint of the first edition of Albrecht Dürer’s treatise on proportion, using the same woodblocks. The woodcuts, which are otherwise frequently described as inferior in the relevant literature, are here of comparable quality to those of the 1528 edition. Minor differences concern the typography. On leaf Q3 the two upper heads are reversed; in other copies of this reprint a different woodblock was used for this detail. Owing to its close similarity to the original and the retention of the date of the first edition on the title page, this reprint is frequently confused with it. Dürer’s final theoretical work was published posthumously, though prepared for the press and in part corrected by the author himself. In it he develops his geometrical and arithmetical principles of proportion and brings the representation of the human body in space and in motion together into a systematic figural canon. Binding somewhat bumped and scuffed, covers with cut marks. Portion of the title page mounted onto a later inserted free endpaper (no loss of text), this with an old ownership stamp. Pages overall lightly to moderately darkened, occasionally somewhat foxed, margins partly with a faintly darkened waterstain (not affecting text or images). Leaf A6 bound directly after the title page. Tear in the inner margin of leaf C5 neatly and professionally repaired. Leaf S5 with the originally double-sided folding plate “Der ander Felscher” (recto with concave arc and the measurements of the very slender woman, Schoch III, 277.110; verso with convex arc and the measurements of the very slender man, Schoch III, 277.111) only half present and approximately separated along the fold. Leaf Y4 with a small tear in the upper margin (approx. 1 cm, not affecting text or image). Page X3a blank as usual. Leaf Y3 lacking, with the loss of 2 full-page woodcuts, as well as leaf Z5 with the “Elegia in obitum Alberti Dureri” by Willibald Pirckheimer and leaf Z6 with the corrigenda. Overall nevertheless a good to very good copy of Dürer’s treatise on proportion. The woodcuts are preserved in clear, strong impressions.
