The American skater Jackson Haines (1840–1875) is regarded as the father of modern figure skating. Drawing on his background in ballet, he created a more graceful style performed to music, breaking with the previously much more rigid and formal so-called "English style." Haines travelled throughout Europe for many years, giving exhibitions as well as teaching figure skating. During the winter of 1866/67 he visited Stockholm, where he was photographed by the photographer Jacob Lundbergh (1828–1904).
