One photograph hand-coloured by Arimondi. One photograph signed by Arimondi on the verso. The verso of one photograph bears the opening of an autograph letter by Arimondi, dated 12 February 1992.
The subjects range from erotic male nudes to portraits. One photograph bears the concluding caption in Swedish, "har AIDS" ("has AIDS"). All photographs were gifted by Arimondi to Arne Wesslau, his former partner and first great love. Victor Arimondi (1942–2001) was an Italian-Swedish-American photographer, best known for his erotic male nudes and the books ”The Look of Men” (1980) and ”Boyfriends” (1984). Arimondi was born in Bologna and grew up in Italy and Sweden. He began working as a model in 1965, walking the runway for designers including Armani, Balmain, and Yves Saint Laurent in London, New York, and Paris, while also modelling for magazines such as ”Elle” and ”Esquire”. During his modelling career, he was one of Sweden's most sought-after male models. In the 1970s, Arimondi moved behind the camera, first working in Sweden before relocating to New York in 1979 and to San Francisco in 1981. He photographed fashion for magazines including ”Vogue” and ”Harper's Bazaar”, and made nude photographs both for his own books and for magazines such as ”Revolt”. Of his nude work, he wrote: "I prefer to let my images speak to your heart – or to your groin." Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Arimondi documented San Francisco's LGBTQ community, particularly the AIDS epidemic. He died of HIV-related complications in 2001. During his career, Victor Arimondi held several solo exhibitions in both Stockholm and San Francisco. Since his death, his work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in San Francisco. His photographs are represented in the collections of institutions including Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco.
