12mo (159 x 92 mm). 2 ff., 116 pp. -- Red morocco exquisitely gilt, signed by CUZIN: large rococo dentelle border on covers, five bands raised on spine, in 2nd and 3rd compartement gilt lettered, the others richly gilt with small tools, 2 fine gilt fillets on edges of covers and gilt rolls on turn-ins, doublures and endleaves of fine marbled paper, edges gilt. Three bookplates.
Remarkably fine copy of the extremely rare first edition of Marivaux's masterpiece. Copy of the highest quality in a sumptuous binding by Cuzin with most distinguished provenances, the last: from the legendary bibliophile collection of French literature by CHARLES HAYOIT (1901 - 1984); the copy was sold by Sotheby's Paris in 2005 for FF 65.000 (USD 8.533). -- FRANZISQUE CUZIN (1836 - 1890) is regarded as one of the finest bookbinders at his time.
