Light brown and burgundy-red-morocco of c. 1840, profusely gilt and inlaid, the large cornerpieces "à la cathedrale" on covers gilt in a silvery shade and inlaid in rose and light-green, in centres the gilt large crowned arms, inlaid in red, green and blue, surrounded by the order of the Guelphs ("Nec Aspera Terrent") and the Order of the Garter ("Honi soit qui mal y pense"); spine raised on four half bands, 2nd and 4th compartment gilt lettered, the others finely gilt on a "pointillé" ground; edges of boards and turn-ins gilt; gilt edges. To be noted is also the duke's spectacular multicoloured armorial bookplate on upper inside cover.
Magnificent Romantic multi-coloured inlaid morocco binding for the bibliophile Duke William of Brunswick by the renowned court binder (since 1839) JOHANN JAKOB SELENKA (1801-1871). Characteristic for his brilliantly designed and executed bindings is the use of gilding in different hues (as above mentioned). Selenka was without doubt one of the most gifted and creative German binders of his period. Although unsigned (as usual), the binding can be attributed with certainty to Selenka because of his unique style, the used tools (found also on signed books) and the great technical accomplishment. -- Early edition of "The Pioneers", but the first on the European continent. It was the first published (although the fourth in the series) and probably the most interesting of the five famous novels, known as "The Leatherstocking Tales" by J. F. Cooper (1789-1851).
