A curious broadside lotto game, devised by the French printseller and teacher of algebra (i.e. numerology) Jean-Baptiste Alliette (1738-1791). He claimed that he learnt the art of telling fortunes with playing cards from three cartomancers. In 1770 he published his own book on fortune-telling with cards, Etteilla, ou manière de se récréer avec un jeu de cartes, for which he coined the term cartonomancie (which became cartomancy). ‘Etteilla’ was his own name read backwards, and his cards became the most famous of all the French cards for fortune-telling, under the name ‘Tarots d’Etteilla’. The Nouvel Etteilla first appeared in 1789 and was reissued in several versions in the following years. This particular version includes Le Nouvel Etteilla with a history of the game and how to interpret dreams with the 33 cards, followed by an index of dream symbols to help the players in predicting their future. Helpfully for those hoping for a quick route to riches the publisher also included all the winning lottery numbers from 1758 to January 1806. Around 1772 he practised in Strasbourg (we have his printing of a Lotto des indiens... Extrait des récréations algébriques d'Etteilla bearing the date 1772 and the printer's address “chez Alliette, bourgeois et marchand d'estampes à Strasbourg”). In 1777, there is a trace in the town registers of his payment of 103 florins and 5 shillings for the acquisition of citizenship; in the archives, his name appears in a register of the print merchants' guild dated 1779. In the 1781 edition of the same guild register, he appears as a “no longer resident member”. Not found in WorldCat or KVK
