Contemporary half brown morocco by Paul Affolter with gilt titles and beautiful floral gilt and tinted leather inlay decorations to the spine, the marbled boards ruled in gilt. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Printed rectos only. Upper and lower wrappers retained and bound in at the front and rear. Half title. Lavishly illustrated by Alphonse Mucha throughout in colour, gilt and black and white. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm with some rubbing at the corners, spine tips and hinges, with a few light abrasions to the upper and lower boards, the gilt bright and fresh. The contents, with a discrete heraldic book label to the front pastedown, some spotting to the early and late pages, and to the margins, are otherwise clean throughout. An excellent example of a scarce, spectacular Mucha publication.

Paris: The Black Sun Press. 1931 First edition. A rare, inscribed presentation copy from Max Ernst to James Stern. Publisher’s black buckram, decorated in gilt to a design by Max Ernst. Illustrated with 19 original photograms by Max Ernst, each with a glassine guard, with the title printed in red. Black endpapers. Housed in a bespoke quarter morocco solander case. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with rubbing and fraying at the spine tips and corners. The contents are entirely complete, clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. This work is a fragment from Crevel's novel Babylone. The 19 photograms of Ernst's frottages were completed with the collaboration of Man Ray in his studio after days of trials, with Ernst's rubbings on transparent paper serving as the negative. Ernst had developed his frottage technique as a visual counterpart to the Surrealist ideal of "automatic writing," and the dark visions he produces here perfectly capture the darkness of Crevel's own vision, here translated by Kay Boyle. A fine and strikingly original production.

HOYLE, Harry: THREE BLUE DRAGOON PIGEON PORTRAITS
Original artwork. 1933-1934 Three original watercolour paintings of prize-winning blue dragoon pigeons on paper, each pigeon accompanied by their hand-lettered exhibition history. Each painting is signed and dated by the artist. The pigeons pictured have the ring numbers “1918-22”, “06-30” and “33-3330”. Each painting is mounted on board and bound with grey textured paper and black faux leather opposite the corresponding exhibition history to form a folding ‘book’ that can be opened and closed. The paintings measure 18.7 x 21.5 cm and the boards measure 20.3 x 23 cm. The paintings are in fine condition, the paint extremely bright, the paper clean. The bindings are lightly rubbed at the extremities, the spine of the ‘book’ containing pigeon “1918-22” has been replaced, the covers are lightly scuffed and the spine tips with slight wear (the painting inside remains fine and bright).

POTTER, Beatrix: ‘THEY TOOK PETER’S CLOTHES OFF THE SCARECROW’. An original painting illustrating ‘The Tale of Benjamin Bunny’.
Original artwork. [c.1904] Original watercolour, ink and bodycolour painted on cream silk, depicting Peter and Benjamin in a field with three birds and a scarecrow behind them. With the hand-written caption “They took Peter’s clothes off the scarecrow. Benjamin tried on the tam-o-shanter, but it was too big for him” in ink underneath, and with a small pencilled number “8” to the left. Framed. Near fine condition, the painting and silk bright and clean save for a few very faint, tiny marks. The lightly rubbed frame is firm and sound. The illustrations measures 11.2 x 11.2cm and the glazed frame measures 13 x 13 cm. A stunning original Beatrix Potter illustration with excellent provenance.
