TRADITIONAL WEAVING in North Africa 1920 Leather-bound album with 32 mounted photographs
This well preserved medium-sized leather album contains 32 carefully mounted photographs dedicated exclusively to the subject of traditional weaving in North Africa. The captions, neatly written in French, guide the viewer through the entire process, from the preparation of the raw material to the completion of various woven objects. A particular strength of the album lies in its systematic documentation of wool processing. The photographs show the preliminary stages in detail: washing, drying, carding and spinning the wool, carried out in domestic courtyards or rural settings. These images provide valuable insight into the artisanal knowledge and communal labour that precede the actual weaving, emphasizing the material foundations of textile production. Different types of weaving projects are presented, including tent panels, carpets and burnous garments. The photographer adopts a clear and didactic approach. The vertical and horizontal looms are depicted with particular care, as are the gestures of the weavers at work. This collection is remarkable for its exclusive concentration on a single craft, thus forming a focused ethnographic study of traditional North African textile production. This travel album, comprising 42 pages with between two and six photographs per page, documents a journey to Egypt and the Holy Land undertaken around 1938, many of them captioned in English. The carefully arranged prints form a vivid visual narrative of a late interwar voyage through regions of enduring historical and religious significance. A substantial portion of the album is devoted to views of Cairo. Animated street scenes, river views and architectural landmarks convey the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the Egyptian capital on the eve of the Second World War. Among the more distinctive subjects is the celebrated Cafe Groppi. The photographer demonstrates a clear eye for urban life, alternating panoramic prospects with intimate observations. The journey continues to the Holy Land, with numerous photographs taken in Jerusalem and in various towns and rural localities across what is today Israel. Sacred sites, ancient streets and expansive landscapes are interspersed with characteristic pilgrimage images. A particularly atmospheric and well-preserved collection of 191 photogravures, arranged in two folders, documenting a journey to Egypt undertaken around New Year‘s Eve 1929. The images present a vivid visual record of a Nile voyage by houseboat, capturing both the celebrated monuments and some evocative land-scapes encountered along the route. All prints are carefully mounted on white embossed card, giving the ensemble a uniform and elegant presentation that reflects the refined touristic albums of the late 1920s. The series begins in Cairo, with sweeping views of the city, including impressive perspectives of the Citadel and some urban scenes. Further photographs depict the monumental plateau of Giza, with detailed studies of the pyramids and the Sphinx, rendered in rich tonal gradations typical of high-quality photo-gravure printing. The journey then follows the Nile southwards. Particularly striking are the sequences from Luxor and Karnak, where the camera dwells on colossal temple columns, avenues of sphinxes, and dramatic architectural fragments bathed in light and shadow. This well preserved heavy leather-bound album comprises 63 pages with on average three photographs per page and documents a German traveller‘s journey to Egypt in 1925. The album, entirely and meticuously captioned in German, offers a rich visual account of Cairo and the great pharaonic sites along the Nile. A large number of views are devoted to Cairo, including animated street scenes, mosques and bazaars, river views, and panoramic prospects that vividly convey the atmosphere of the Egyptian capital in the mid-1920s. The photographer shows a good sense for architectural detail and urban life, balancing monumental vistas with intimate observations. Further sections of the album lead to Upper Egypt, with extensive photographs taken in Luxor and at the vast temple complex of Karnak. Columns, pylons and colossal statues are recorded with a clear documentary intention also capturing some ongoing excavation works even claiming a picture of Howard Carter, reflecting the enduring European fascination with ancient Egyptian civilisation.
