French red morocco on six raised bands, second compartment with gilt stamped title, all others richly gilt, covers framed by gilt triple rules, all edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles. Endpapers lined with marbled paper. Folio (385 x 248 mm). Extremities rubbed, covers with a few stains.

First edition of one of the major European works on Orientalism in the 17th century, compiled by d'Herbelot and completed and published by the orientalist scholar Antoine Galland after d'Herbelot's death. Herbelot spent thirty years working on this alphabeticallly arranged encyclopaedia of the Orient, including much information on Arabic, Persian and Turkish literature and history. Slight age-toning to pages, a nice copy in a very decorative contemporary French morocco binding.
