A volume of model letters by one of the great correspondents of his age, first published in 1751. ‘There was no more popular writer in Germany around mid-century than Gellert’ (1715–1769), who, alongside his verse fables, ‘is remembered for his important treatise on letter writing (1751) and his novel, Leben der schwedischen Gräfin von G*** (1746–8) [which, when it appeared in London in 1752 as The History of the Swedish Countess of G*, was the first work of German literature to appear in English translation]. The influence of his works upon the lifestyle of the German population is well-documented. He carried on an enormous correspondence with persons from all sectors of society, who sought out his advice on every manner of subject’ (Robert P.
