Square 8vo, pp. 43, [1] blank, with pink spine covering, together with 96 cards, printed on recto only, within frame, (1-88 number, and 1-8), giving letters and numbers with examples; a little foxed; housed in the original pale green printed slipcase, extremities a little worn, but in remarkably good condition.
Unrecorded Swiss introduction to children’s education based on the principles of the educationalist Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852). Froebel prioritized child-led play, holistic development and the belief that childhood is valuable in itself and not just as preparations for adulthood. The central principle is building on the child’s unique interests and encouraging connections to nature and community. It was in the second half of his educational practice, that he concentrated more on pre-school education as the foundation of all further learning, and this is clearly exemplified in this work. In this introduction to early years education Schnyder gives a Fröbel inspired outline of child development and education, and the various phases of childhood development. He stresses the importance of children engaging with education rather than being forced to learn. His game-like cards of the letters of the alphabet, individual words and complete stories show the progression of child-based learning. The alphabet cards are in six individual sections and contain a large image of a child with the letter displayed on a board, below the letter is written in italics and accompanied by a number. A number of cards deal with basic arithmetic. The cards are introduced one by one and Schnyder advises against progressing too quickly. Adolf Schnyder (born 1817 in Sursee) was a teacher for the deaf and dumb. It is unclear whether he was related to the composer Xaver Schnyder v Wartensee, who had worked with Pestalozzi and had offered Fröbel his castle at Wartensee to establish the school. Their collaboration was short-lived and Fröbel moved to Willisau near Burgdorf. Christian D Beck.
