First edition of one of Breitkopf’s important publications on the early history of printing, the evolution of printing types and their respective sizes. Johann Gottlob Immanuel Breitkof (1719-1794) was one of the most prominent figures in 18th century publishing in Germany and arguably the most innovative. Amongst the music publishers of his time he was the most significant. He published on the history of typography, on the printing and production of playing cards, and also revolutionised the printing of geographical maps by using movable type rather than woodcuts or engraving. ‘This short treatise can be regarded as the result of a lifetime’s work... devoted without interruption and with epoch-making success to the production of the book beautiful. J. G. Breitkopf expanded the printing house he inherited from his father into one of the leading publishers in Germany. In addition he was a researcher of old books and assembled one of the most valuable collections on the history of typography.
