Contemporary marbled calf (scratched, bumped, rubbed, capitals worn scratched, with tears and small missing sections, and covers with slight losses) with a gold-embossed coat of arms and rich gilding. First edition of the work on the Spanish Library, featuring a detailed annotated bibliography by the orientalist, Hebraist and eminent librarian José Rodríguez de Castro (1739–1799). He was in charge of the libraries of the Spanish kings Charles III and Charles IV, and produced this magnum opus as his principal work. De Castro “was a disciple and collaborator of Miguel Casiri and undertook the publication of an ambitious *Biblioteca Española* (1781–1786), written in Castilian, the first volume of which was, significantly, printed a year before the reprint of Nicolás Antonio’s *Bibliothecas*. The work aimed to provide a comprehensive bibliographical survey of Spanish rabbinical literature; however, it was subjected to severe critical criticism by Tomás Antonio Sánchez and Juan Antonio Pellicer. He died prematurely without having managed to publish the third volume.” (Wikipedia 22 May 2025). - De Castro "fue discípulo y colaborador de Miguel Casiri y emprendió la edición de una ambiciosa Biblioteca Española (1781-1786) redactada en castellano y cuyo primer tomo se imprimió significativamente un año antes que la reedición de las Bibliothecas de Nicolás Antonio. La obra pretendía hacer una gran reseña bibliográfica de la producción rabínica española; sin embargo, recibió importantes vapuleos críticos por parte de Tomás Antonio Sánchez y Juan Antonio Pellicer. Murió prematuramente sin haber logrado publicar el tomo tercero." (Wikipedia 22.05.25). - The title page has some brown, finger and moisture stains; the book as a whole shows slight foxing, with isolated areas of damp edges; it is wavy and shows signs of wear. It bears a contemporary owner’s entry and a deleted owner’s inscription on the title page. The spine is bound slightly out of alignment. - Hoefer IX, 132.
