Utagawa Kuniyoshi Kanadehon Chushingura (The Loyalty of the Forty-Four Ronin). Ukiyo-e colour woodblock print. Ôban yoko-e format. 25 x 37 cm. Edo (Tokyo), c. 1855. I. Samurai warriors in the snow. – The print depicts a winter landscape with snow-covered trees and steep slopes. In the foreground, a tree cuts diagonally across the picture plane and dominates the composition. On the right, peering out from between the branches, is the figure of a samurai carrying four katana swords. Crouching low, he moves cautiously through the scene. II. Ronin beneath a starry night sky. – This woodblock print depicts a tense nocturnal scene featuring a group of ronin in front of a complex of buildings. On the reverse, at the top edge, there are old mounting marks (two pieces of crepe paper that can be removed).
