Second edition; the first was published in 1658. The magnum opus of the poet and first Chancellor of the Académie Française, Jean Desmarets de Saint-Sorlin (1595–1676), in which he ‘vividly describes the soul’s ascent to God and the delights of a life devoted to God’ (LThK III, 225). Saint-Sorlin was a favourite of Cardinal de Richelieu, at whose instigation he wrote numerous plays. The copperplate title page of Part I (verso) bears an old, overwritten dedication. Inside cover with a handwritten signature entry. Some pages have slightly damp edges; occasionally slightly browned; a few leaves in the fourth part are heavily browned, with slight brown stains, as well as a few darkened damp spots. - Brunet II, 635.
