Contemporary brown calf (capitals worn and torn, a little scratched, bumped and rubbed) with formerly gold embossed spine and spine label (oxidized). Amsterdam, Plantin-Moretus, 1652.

Fourth and final edition. “The finest and most sought-after of the editions produced by Lipsius” (Ebert). A magnificent, richly illustrated edition. Not only the copperplate engravings but also the woodcut ornamentation are remarkably beautiful, including many imaginative initials and vignettes featuring putti playing on garlands. The frontispiece features a portrait of the Flemish philosopher and philologist Justus Lipsius (Joest Lips; 1547–1606), engraved by Cornelius Galle the Elder (1576–1650), who also engraved the two masterful portrait plates: The bust of the Roman philosopher, playwright, naturalist, politician and writer Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 1–65 AD), who was one of the undisputed ‘bestsellers’ among the writers of antiquity and, as a Stoic, one of the most influential teachers. The other plate shows one of the finest engravings based on Peter Paul Rubens’ (1577–1640) famous painting *The Death of Seneca*, created between 1612 and 1615. Brunet V, 276f. Dibdin 397.
