FIRST EDITION. 3 vols. in 2. Folio. (c.50 x 32 cms). Half title present in all 3 volumes. Bound in contemporary (i.e. c.1822) tree calf, sides with triple fillet gilt borders and floral corner devices, spines tooled in gilt, raised bands, red morocco lettering pieces. Two double-page engraved maps of Greece (the first with the author’s route rubricated) Volume I:, frontispiece portrait portrait of Choiseul-Gouffier in the third volume. Volume I contains 126 numbered engraved plates on 100 leaves; the two parts of Volume II include a total of 159 numbered engraved plates on 68 leaves including the two extra plates (numbered bis 8 and bis 76); A total of 285 plates after J.B.H ilaire, Moreau le Jeune et al. plusnumerous engraved vignette head- and tail-pieces. Intermittent light foxing and browning, some scuffs to binding, old repairs to spine extremitie, generally a very good copy. Purple armorial stamp stamp of Dom Pedro de Sousa Holstein, 1st Duke of Palmela, (1781-1850), to half title and title of each volume. Volume one in the first issue state (of three) being identified as ending on the fourth line of p.xvi of the Discours préliminaire with the words “exoriare aliquis.” “Le premier volume de cet ouvrage, à l’époque où il parut pour la première fois, était incontestablement, sous le rapport de la gravure, la plus belle production en ce genre qu’on eût encore vue; aussi eut-il beaucoup de succès... l’ouvrage entier...est d’un grand intérêt.” (Brunet) An excellent copy of Choiseul-Gouffier’s massive and spectacularly illustrated record of his voyage to Greece on board the frigate Atalante, begun in 1776, commanded by Joseph Bernard de Chabert, Marquis of Chabert, who was interested in astronomy. Choiseul-Gouffier travelled to Greece as part of the Marquis de Chabert’s expedition. He was appointed French ambassador at Constantinople in 1784. The completion of the work was interrupted by the events of the Greek revolution, with the final volume completed, after the author’s death, under the direction of Barbié de Bocage. The most important work on Greece and Turkey of the period, the book is beautifully printed on thick paper with fine engraved vignettes and, given that it took forty years to produce, it exhibits a remarkable typographical uniformity.
